haha..well ya'll can go back and forth about it but bottomline pac is my favorite..so IMO he's the Goat..
he didnt really have that much time to do what he wanted.i think if he lived we would've got the chance to see him elolve majorly..i like the way pac brings sensitive subjects to life, with a descriptive style and alot of emotion, and imagery. he didnt really do pun's but some people put way too much emphasis on that.
bottom line ...i got a list and pac is at the top of it..but biggie aint on it..

lol @ em the goat

I mean seriously, he is going to win the competition as the "hottest emcee" for MTV (fortunately they are extending the contest because Eminem got so many votes, that they want a wider range of hip hop's audience to vote), last year, he won "best MC alive" for Vibe, why does Eminem have to own every title in hip hop. He doesn't even begin to represent what hip hop is all about, he is just one aspect of it.

We really don't know what kind of impact Eminem has had on hip hop. You can't point to the direction of hip hop as being influenced by Eminem like a 2 pac or a Rakim. You can't point to his innovative rhyming like a Big Daddy Kane.

The most popular MC on the earth. I would give him that credit anytime of the week then again "American Idol" has dominated television as the most popular show for half this decade.

Maybe in 20 years, we can look back at his career, and really decide what kind of impact that he has made.

Jay Z on the other hand is still influencing hip hop now, look at the hype around "Blueprint 3" compared to "Relapse". Relapse might sell more copies, but everything that Jay Z is doing is being copied by every artist in the game.

Eminem is just an entity that is almost outside of hip hops perspective, in a sense, because you don't have to be a hip hop fan to be a fan of Eminem.

I've approached this argument with so many different angles. Eventually, I'm going to make a point that someone agrees with, and its going to change the way that we talk about Eminem. Maybe!

Once again, this is opinion, subjective, biased, I'm not saying that I am definitely correct, but I have yet to see someone with an alternative suggestion that isn't immersed with "standom".

I agree with you plex. Eminem really hasn't left a mark on hip-hop. Sure, he is the most popular and best selling hip-hop artist of all time, but I could never consider him a GOAT for the simple fact that hip-hop would still be the same today if he never emerged. You can't say the same for guys like Rakim, BDK, even Dre despite the fact that it sounds like Em ghost writes for him now. Those 3 are pioneers. If you removed them from history, hip-hop would be different. Where would rap be without Dre or N.W.A? What about even the censorship of music during that time period? Remember how controversial Fuck The Police was? Artists are doing remakes of that song almost two decades later. Big Daddy Kane is the pioneer half of you cats probably haven't even heard of but without a doubt influenced your style. How? He pioneered the use of multies. That was HIS style. Everyone else took that idea and ran with it, including Eminem. To me, those 3 cats have more influence in the game than people give them credit for. Dre and NWA pushed the envelope of music censorship and basically started the gangsta rap movement, which most of us grew up on. Rakim made hip-hop smarter. It may not be true, but I credit Rakim with being the first intellectual emcee. The imagery, vocabulary, delivery, it was unrivaled when he came out and cats are still trying to copy it today. And like I said, BDK. If you love multies, you should have a shrine for this man. How about Run DMC? The first hip-hop act to step across the rap boundary and collaborate with a completely different genre of music. How about DJ Premier? One of the architects responsible for the East Coast's sound. Granted, he's like a combination of pioneering DJs from the roots of hip-hop, but the man has been in the game since the 80s and is still dropping hits. Gotta give credit to the dudes behind the scene.
