Shine On You Crazy Diamond Cover

Post by drunken jesus »

kept the bluesy vibe and made it a lil funky, added a lil more fx and what not then usual but didn't go overboard, like the original song has a good amount of variation between real instruments & synths longest cover i've done i upped the tempo a lil bit but its still around 11 minutes

i'll be doing a full length cohesive cover tape this or a redux variation of it will be on it the rest of the material from it will be posted in whole at around the end of this month, if all goes well should have something by christmas as well

elevator music?, did you listen the whole way through? its a complex piece that evolves into different sections as it goes, the part where the drums & bass first kick in is really dope & the part where the guitar solos come in the OG songs vocal melody is also dope & lively

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLIy2t-KAc0 pt 1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dt49fKsKcOY pt 2

^ original song, i clearly livened it up a good bit, especially in the intro and solos, wish i could figure out what kinda effect they had set-up on the lead it's ill as hell, i know there's a wah-wah but theirs something else that i can't pin-point, if i did something similar on the synth lead i used it'd sound alot better i think, while i agree that it would sound better with vocals, you can listen to the original and hear it doesn't have vocals for 3/4ths of it

i wish i had a dope singer to work with on covers but i lost contact with the only good singer i know, anybody who knows a good singer have them get at me, i'll gladly exchange production/song writing/executive producing and work with them on songs if they collaborated with me on covers & hooks etc. they'll just need aim/msn/or yahoo and a decent quality mic set-up @ home so the workflows direct, i might hit up dzk and see if hes interested in laying vocals over any of my covers, hes posted a few cover songs on his page in the past that were ill so maybe he'll be up for it

rambled a bit oh well, thanks for the feed i'll return the favor on something

I like the change up's you did throughout the instumental. You should submit this for a movie, sounds like it would make a good ending for a soundtrack. I can see the credits rolling by as this plays in the background. Probably not your intentions but I'm just not well rounded enough to know the difference.

The arrangement was good and switched up in time to keep any part from feeling stale. Some of the instrument samples sounded a bit fake, though. Most notably the brass(?) instrument. Especially when compared to the drums which were great sample quality. Right around the 9:12 mark a nice synth comes in and I think that suits the sound much better. Overall the whole piece picks up there quite nicely. Piano and bass sound pretty good through out, as well. Ending felt a bit abrupt but maybe that was just me.

Anyway, good shit and that was good choice to cover. You did it justice. I definitely don't mind listening to instrumental versions of songs so even with out a singer I enjoyed this.

yeah @ kau good ear the one brass is "fake" its a synth patch not a sampled brass perhaps it'd sound better with a real brass section or a more convincing synth brass sound especially since i used a real brass for the stabs that come in when the beat drops, & yeah the synth that comes in towards the end fits the track well i think i may put it as the main lead & put a sax at the end like the OG & yeah it does end abruptly i did some cutting in the beginning & end the OG has synth pads fading in and out on the intro and outro i upped the tempo a lil bit to shorten the time as well

word i mainly make covers to bump in the ride as long as the compositions good & interesting you don't really miss the vocals too much also in most of my covers if possible i try to have some expressive lead instrument like a guitar, sax, or nice synth play the vocal melody so composition-wise it doesn't sound like somethings missing(in this i used distorted guitar) i like taking classic songs & giving them a bit of a new modern feel with hip hop style mixing so the drums & bass knock

when you get a chance check out my Abra Cadabra cover on page 2 of this forum, i think you'll like it, it's one of my favorite covers i've done, i used a slightly distorted lead guitar in place of the vocal melody turned out real catchy

@ aLb - yeah i could definitely see this being played as a credits song, fyi if you didn't know this is a cover of Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond

i'm still on the early stages of putting this tape together, no idea on a final tracklist or anything of that nature i'm mainly gathering/mapping/laying down scores for potential tracks so far it's make up's looking like a mix of 60's-70's classic rock/funk/soul & 90's alternative rock, so if anybody has any suggestions for good songs to cover i'm all ears i'm not adverse to any style or genre but i'd like to stay away from real recent stuff & try to suggest songs that have a decent variety of instrumentation (ex. - not the basic rock set-up of 2-3 guitars, bass, & drums it doesn't really give me much to work with) --- gonna make a thread in the lounge about the tape for those interested

realize i keep kinda going off on tangents here, i like to respond to feedback in a detailed way to give non-producers a lil bit of insight to how i approach things & drop some knowledge & terminology without getting too technical so people interested in the art of producing can better understand the methodology & process

Rugged wrote:Between 4:15 - 5:10, there's that mexican sounding acoustic guitar, I wasn't a fan of that, just doesn't match with the synth's in my opinion. The melody was fine, just the overall sound, the chords hit too hard and loud for the low bass, maybe it was just the volume.
yeah i'm not really satisfied with any of the guitars in it btw the one your referring to's an electric strat not a spanish acoustic, i'm gonna switch them up when i do the final version
Rugged wrote:The opening was pretty good, had a Pink Floyd feel to it... ...really sounds like something out of a Pink Floyd album or an old 70's movie.
this is a cover of a pink floyd song
