Hah, this is the first forum I've ever joined where a thread like this is created every time a new member joins! Nice touch.

Well I don't know if anyone is going to read this, but I might aswell answer, I haven't got anything better to do.

I don't really have any previous material to post, since it's been quite a while since I last recorded something, and I'm not exactly that proud of it. But I'm writing again, an I'm going to record more soon. I can show you a couple of lyrics my by me though. It's nothing that's awfully impressive, but I think it's okey, and I'm improoving with everything I write.
You can't carry a verse, not even once in a while
When you're lucky enough to get it's fucking buns off the ground
Cause you're just a confused lill' fuck who runs around
With his pants down, I see you noticed them ants now (that was me!)
I noticed there's no fucking method to your madness
But hopefully there will be a Meth O.D., you "badass"
And as you self-claimed "G's" will hit me under the belt
I have my pants hanging from my knees, so I wonder if it helps
And I don't even feel like doing any fucking name dropping
You'll do that yourself, and the ground's where your fame's stopping
You bit Brown's sound, with quite a bit of lame topping
And don't try to hit any notes wuss, cause your aim's sucking
Fucking face the facts, your shit ain't rocking
You must've confused rap with spitting and farting
You can't be clever neither, cause your wit aint' sparking
Just crawl the fuck away, go sit in the dark and
Yeah I've been trough it all, lived by Murphy's law
But I can thank that for the fact the I'm now murky raw
Been at the school of hard knocks, doing community service
Been so much out of body that I enter funerals nervous
I always seemed to see the seamy side of life
It ain't easy to ignore it, it's screaming see me, right?
I've been there with the knife wanting to leave tonight
Cause there ain't no easy way out when decieving bite
You think this evening might be the last on for me then
If you got one wish you would be passed out and bleeding
Cause getting past grieving is harder than just leaving
But when I think about it life, be a little cruel
Please feed me some fuel, and lead me to a duel
Don't rest, do your best, to fire up my engine
Hold a lighter to my chest to annoy me while I'm benching
Stir up some tension, try to blur my comprehension
Give me a reason to fight, give me lines to write
Throw all you got, even dynamite
Make me throw up, make me fucking explode, cause I'ma blow up

I'm currently living and grew up on the north pole (not exactly, but quite close, I'm from Norway). I've been through a little bit of this and a little bit of that during my childhood, which basically is the reason to why I'm rapping. So I've been posting my lyrics a few other places, occasionally, but I never seem to get much feedback. Therefore I though I would try this place, and if I like it here, I'm going to stay active. Oh and I found the site searching for hip hop sites on google. Nothing fancy there.

That's all you need to know about me for now. And if anyone actually read through all of this crap, then thank you. :obscene-drinkingcheers:

Thanks guys!

KP, I just quoted those lyrics to make it seem more tidy and less of an insanely huge post xD Recording, yeah, um, I'm just recording from my basement actually. My quality ain't good at all at the moment, which is kind of why I don't record. I have a pretty good mic + a filter, but I don't have any small locations to record at. Therefore everything I record turns out crappy sounding and with shitloads of echo. I'm going to build myself a little "home-made" booth in my bedroom though, over the course of the next couple of months. Hopefully that will work, so that I can record something with atleaast decent quality.

And I don't know shit about mixing neither, nor am I familiar with any good mixing programs. I'm thinking about downloading Pro Tools and watch a crapload of tutorials though. Cause I can't afford to pay for any mixing.

So that's what's keeping me back at the moment really.

I'm glad you joined the site, honestly. Here, on site, we have several Audio people who are more than willing to give you tips on mixing, recording, home studios and all. I myself record out of a bedroom as well, and from this site alone, I've elevated not only my lyrical status, but my quality as well. Just ask. As for a nice mic and filter, what are you working with? The tutorial route is a very good idea, I've executed and still do that tactic. But in all truth, the only way to get better, is to do it over and over and over again.

Thanks man, I'm starting to like it here already! Seems like there's alot of people here who actually wants to help for the sake of helping, which is awesome! I definitely think I'll get alot out of hanging around here! Both lyrically and quality-wise as you said.

My mic is a Shure SM58, and the filter, heck, I don't have it here at the moment, but it's something I picked up at a local shop. It filters just fine, but it feels like there's even more echo to my recordings when I'm using it. It might just be because I've kept it too far away from the mic though. It said 10-15 cm's on the package, but I think that might be a little far. I'm going to experiment with that when I get time to record. I have a lot of plans for the summer vacation, so I won't have that much time on my hands. If I'm inactive here at times, that's also probably why. Cause I like this forum, and I'm going to stay active as much as I can!

Oh, and I also have a Steinberg CI 1 which I baught a while back, so my mic is connected through that and into my PC.

What mixing progam do you use? Could you reccomend any?

Ok, the filter is designed to stop the pops. For example when u say "pencil", the "p" will have a extra blow of air above the rest of the word, called a pop. Well the filter defuses the pop to the mic never picks it up. In essence it really has nothing to do with echo. The echo comes from u not having anything behind the mic and your vocal sound waves bouncing all over the place and hitting the mic at different angles. A good idea, is placing a bed matress behind the mic, or a ton of shirts and sweaters if u record in a closet. What you are looking to do is muffle ur vocal waves so tet don't re attack the mic. By placing objects such as a pillow u are defusing the echo, stopping it from bouncing back. If u have the money, purchase acoustic foam, but if u don't, place anything absorbent behind the mic to kill echo as much as possible.

As for software, u having a steinberg interface, you will not be able to use any protools before there most recent one which I believe is 9. Every version before 9 is a closed platform, kinda like apple products only work with apple products. 9 finally made it an open platform where any interface will work. I personally have enjoyed using cubase. It's a steinberg product quincidently, but it's awesome on my opinion. U can torrent it just as you can any program, but find one on YouTube that u think u can have fun with. A lot of people have also used fruity loops, logic, cool edit pro, mixcraft, or even a free one called audacity. Another possibility to get ur feet wet is reaper. It's free for a month or something and it's only 50 bucks for a full version. Experimentation is key.

Thanks Enlightend! I will check that out!

Ah, I see KP. I'm going to do that. That was my plan for my "booth" too, making a frame in which I could place a coupple of mattresses around me. So I think that's going to work out pretty good. Right now the only available space I have is a huge apartment room, which isn't really the best place. But in a month or two I am getting a smaller bedroom too, which I place my "booth" in. Thanks!

Yeah, I understand. I have Cubase (AI 5) myself actually! I just couldn't find any tutorials for it on the net, especially no one for mixing of hip hop vocals. And I didn't get much wiser by fooling around with it myself. Everything I tried ended up sound pretty bad. Therefore I just assumed it wasn't a common or good mixing program for hip hop. I am happy that I was wrong. So, which settings and/or effects do you use to mix your vocals? I've always wanted to get that awesome crisp sound to them, but I've never succeeded. Any tips?

Thanks alot for helping me out man, I really appriciate it!

Lol at having 5 of them and giving up. I started with sx3 then went to 5 and I just got 6. Couldn't be happier. What you have to understand, is protools, cool edit, etc. All do the same thing, they just call it Different ways. Essentially ur buying the software that's most convenient to you, ease of access, performance, cosmetics blah blah blah. I've seen some amazing quality from a $50 mic and audacity which is free and dookie. Its all about knowing. I assure you, protools and cubase do the same job, it's like hp vs mac.

The easiest way for us to help you is give us a sample of ur work. From there we can better look at what vsts you are misusing or not using

Yes that is something that is very true about this site. Welcome, by the way.

We truly do want to help others succeed where a lot of other sites want to take people down.

I got number 5 right away, I didn't start out with anything else. But yeah, I just couldn't figure anything out, no one I talked to had it, and there were close to 0 tutorials on the subject. I'm glad to find out that it works just as well though! Makes stuff alot easier for me.

I am going to post a snippet when I get around to it, thank you!

Thanks complex! And that's awesome, I've been looking for a forum like this for quite a long time!

Welcome to the Illest Urge. I just joined last week and I'm hooked. The folks who are active have knowledge and are honest in their feedback, but the jewels...they are deep. Some of these forums are treasure chests of experience and cannot be slept on. Do some digging and you'll get closer to the light.
