I’ve walked this lane before, a place where trees are bare and wind is low
a scarce land, inhabited by these lovely birds that sing a song of sorrow
bright orange beaks and feathers flush, a finish of jet black a contrast
to a lifeless place washed out, a strange feeling my memories recast
as I walk past this bench, almost new yet an old mahogany varnish
shines out against the matt black bars used as legs a subtle tarnish
slowly eats its way into the metal, a thing not seen in centuries
yet to me a déjà vu, a bookmark to a picture ingrained in memories
if only these pictures came with places, it’s like fitting names to faces
a pain that displaces emotions, my head goes blank nothing replaces
so I wake from this dream with a heartbeat thumping like feet on the ground
my eyes open to reveal my phone lighting up as vibrations ring with sound
a text from my old man saying my granddads past, robbed by the angels
weeks past and sadness still fills the voids and memories my brain cradles
repeat of a place he took me when I was at least a decade younger
that’s when I wonder, if I find this place will it end my suffering
and that’s when it hits me, he just wanted a place tranquil, comforting
