1st & 15th/Atlantic Records recording artist Lupe Fiasco lifts a song title from his highly praised debut for it's follow up, 'The Cool,' tentatively set for a summer release.
"There's gonna be a lot of setup and a lot of pre-production on this album, so it's gonna be in pieces," said Lupe. His long awaited September debut,' Food & Liquor,' fell victim to street and online bootleggers last spring, so he reportedly plans on laying the blueprint for 'The Cool' and recording the bulk of material in about a week to avoid a leak. Lupe's sophomore opus reportedly will not feature big names like Jay-Z, Jill Scott and The Neptunes; most production work will be handled by 1st & 15th's in house staff. The emcee also says he'll show off a new perspective this time around.
"Jay-Z's assistant, she pulled me aside at the GQ Men of the Year thing and she was like, 'Now I know you're in the process of rebuilding,' said Lupe, who reportedly hasn't written a rhyme in months and has temporarily tuned out the Internet. "You gave everything that you had. So now you got to take the experiences that you had throughout this process; putting out the album and traveling, doing all this stuff. And now you got to tell those stories.' So it's a whole 'nother side that people are about to see, [more] experienced."
Besides depicting his own worldly excursions, Lupe wants to fill out some of the characters he says many fans may have overlooked on 'Food & Liquor.'
"People are gonna see it and be like, 'Wow, ain't that the dude from this song?," he said. "I'm building concepts now for the album. This album is gonna be a bit more streamlined and a little bit more focused, I guess you could say." However, the jazz and cartoon influenced writer does not want to make 'The cool' a "full-on story about somebody else."
"I been wrestling with how to make the concept about what I want to make the album about fit but still have enough room…where you still get all the ' what I think are — necessary ingredients to do a good, good album," he says. Lupe is up for three Grammy awards in 2007, including "Best Rap Song" for his skate anthem "Kick, Push," and is one of GQ's 2006 Men of the Year.
