Not Much to Make a Man

It don't take much to make a man, I didn't grow up in the slums
There weren't drive-bys on my street, no slangers or guns
The corners were empty of hos, rare violence at the park
But I do know exactly what it feels to be alone in the dark
Cold, hungry, malnutrition runnin in my veins
I had a mother who struggled, walking to work in the rain
A minor in this society, we came up from nothing more
than livin in a box by a pine tree, nothin worth bluffin for
I can now say that I have become a man, cuz i stand here today
In better shape and health, built from growing up that way
I have to admit, jealousy and envy was what i felt
when I saw the rich kids at school wit cell phones on their belts
I was tempted to steal, even hurt, cuz my emotions were overpowering
As a kid I gained strength to get by but still I felt the hate devouring
Spent days smokin, first chokin, in the dark back streets
Only to get caught and get my moms to slap me
That's all it took, no complaints, no regrets
But my past is just something that i could never forget
