Yea Yea...I know this isn't e-bay...but since all of us here are pretty much lyricists, producers and DJ's, I figured why not ask. I get complimented alot on the clean quality of my recordings. Never any feedback...hiss...distortion...shit like that. I'm not hard to hear or understand in my tracks and all of us need to come up in our quality at sum point. I know a few of you here that could use sumthin like this to better ur quality of vocals and muzik. I have a TASCAM DP-01 - 8 TRACK RECORDER. Thing works like a fuckin dream and is easy to use. It's the exact same peice of equipment that I used to record all of my tracks...it's pretty much brand new too. I only bought it 7 months ago from Guitar Center. It currently sells in the stores right now for $300-$340 depending on where you live. But mine is like new...so new it still has more than 5 months left on the manufactuers warrenty alone. I've recently got a huge upgrade as far as my studio equipment is concerned (yes the studio is growing much larger...lol) and was gonna keep the DP-01 on the side just a spare piece of equipement or sumthin I could travel and record with...but seeing how we could all use a lil hand in what we do as artists...I've decided to throw a price-tag on it and pass it along. It's undamaged...clean...still has the warrenty and the users guide...still in the original box and packaging in which it was purchased in. In other words...MINT!!! And like I said...only purchased 7 MONTHS AGO!!! So quit recording into a microphone plugged into ur computer...up ur level a lil bit! This is a great piece of equipment and don't know where I'd be without it. All I'm asking is [s]$285[/s] (two-eighty five) for it...NO TAX. The DP-01 has two mic inputs on ¼" TRS jacks for dual mono or stereo recording. Its eight tracks record at uncompressed CD quality to an internal 40GB hard drive, and a stereo master track is available for recording a mix. Each channel of the DP-01 has a 45mm volume fader, plus dedicated controls for pan, effects send, high EQ and low EQ. An LCD display shows meters, editing settings and locate points. The DP-01 has a USB 2.0 jack for file backup and transferring mixes to a computer. There are analog RCA line outputs, a headphone out and S/PDIF line output.

so you just record into this? i used to have a 4 track, so basically, this is the same concept just digital. i know i prolly sound like an idiot, but i dont know shit about this. so, you would upload the beat onto this and then record the vocal track, correct?

Don't feel bad about askin questions man cuz shit...just 7 months ago when I first started recording myself for the first time...I was full of questions. lol I always had people record me...but to eliminate the middle-man I decided to invest in equipment for myself to get the job done quicker and cheaper! But if you've had a 4 Track...it's the same concept only more tracks. You load ur instrumental into whatever track you want it to be on (usually track # 1 is ideal) and then set track #2 to record ur vocals. If you wanna do double-ups on ur voice after you've done ur primary vocals...set up track # 3 to record ur doubles ups. As far as ur hook...I always like to record my hooks and seperate tracks from my verse so I can add different effects to them without changing the vocals in the whole song. So on and so on. 8 Tracks are very ideal for solo artists and duo's. You can record 3 or 4 niggaz on a 8 track by using the ol' "track-hopping" back n' forth trick and make it work...but then ur gonna rely more on ur mixing skills after that. lol But yea...definately the same concept and the DP-01 has more effects on it than most 4 Tracks.

i assume you use a condenser mic. you have any recommendations for a good, decent priced condenser mic? and what the hell is a preamp?

Oh yea...the old skool cassette recorders. lol I remember those. Have me feelin like young 50 Cent in the Get Rich or Die Tryin movie...lol. But nah...you don't need any XLR Condensed mics or anything...this model actually uses 1/4 inch jacks that you plug into. So basically a standard mic plug-in. I use a standard mic with it...and you've heard the quality of my tracks. You couldn't tell the difference. And the best part is; is it's cheaper. Buy urself a decent standard mic and Sam Ash or Guitar Center. You can get cheapy combo packs with a mic, a clip and a chord for like $30 but just invest in a decent mic for like $60 and a $9 fifteen foot chord. SAMSON makes a good mic with a built on pop filter. But I'd invest in a $15 external pop-filter w/gooseneck just incase to get rid of any extra popping noise. Once you have ur mic, ur chord and ur 8 track...ur ready to go. Don't do like some people and hold the mic though...most vocal mics and sensative and they'll pick up the sound of any motion. Invest in a mic stand!!! You can find a PROLINE mic stand for like $25.

As for Preamp. A preamp is used for switching sources, adjusting volume controls and helps for low guitar or vocal signals.

the difference between condensors and dynamic mics(regular ones) is condensors need a preamp to power them & typically are better quality, a dynamic mic you can just plug into your mic slot of your soundcard and record, a condensor you need to plug it into your preamp then into your computer

you can get a good shure dynamic mic for a little over a $100, a good condensor mic will run you like $200 and you can get a decent preamp for like $60

for a dope recording system you only need to drop around $400, get a good condensor mic, a good soundcard, a good preamp, & a good soundcard, & a mic stand, cords, & pop filter, you can mix digitally on your computer and if you have a good soundcard the quality'll be clean, the benefit of mixing on your computer is depending on your computer you can pretty much have unlimited tracks, so you can layer different effects easily in different tracks

Oh no doubt...A condenser mic is always gonna be better than a mic with a standard plug-in. But like I said...if you're good at mixing and cleaning up and shit like that when it comes down to the final mix...you'd never be able to tell the difference. Like I said...most of my tracks have been recorded with a regular mic...but even people who've been workin in muzik for a while have a hard time telling the difference in clarity & sound. It depends on ur mic....if or if not you have a filter and even more important...ur enviornment. Is it closed off...is air getting through there...shit like that. But like I said...if you have skill on the boards as far as the editing stage goes...you can clean it up to where nobody could tell the difference.

Yea...you can mix shit on the actual 8 Track itself if you really want too...it's really ur perogative. But even when I'm done recording I still export all of my sound files from the 8 Track to the computer so I can mix it all down. It's true...if you use a computer program (such a Acid Pro for example)...you'll have unlimited tracks. But recording from a mic directly to computer is kind of the days of old. Effective...but old. And yes...you have to worry about the quality of ur computers sound card and shit like that. Too much of a hassle if you ask me. Having a seperate unit to record ur vocals and projects is so much cleaner and orginized. True...ur limited on ur tracks. But if ur smart...you know how to make it work!

yeah recording on a mixer'll give you better quality, & its a good bit easier

and mixing is the biggest issue most inexperienced rappers run into cause you can have the nicest mic available and if you mix it shitty it isn't going to sound like you recording on that mic, enviroment is also an issue if you're just recording in an open room it isn't going to sound half as good as recording in a booth whether its an expensive one or a homemade one
