master of ceremonies which is 1 of many definitions would probably be the root of it, but like many slang termonology created from the streets mc was also made, not based off of emcee but people use it like that..y? maybe to be creative like m&m(eminem/marshall mathers) who knows..

But emcee's adopted that term from DJ's. DJ's (more specifically those who worked in radio stations and clubs) crowned that term because it was another way of refering to themselves as "the host" aka the individual obviously in charge. The term drifted into Hip-Hop for the same reason that some artists call themselves "The King"
...it was for the simple reason of having a different term that they could use to introduce themselves as "the main attraction" or the "main man you came to see"
