[ Q & A ] - Ask Jesus

Post by drunken jesus »

Have a question for jesus & think the answer may be relevant/helpful to others ask it here. Try to keep questions relevant to music (production, writing, recording, rapping) as Jeeves or Google will probably provide you with better answers to random questions you have.

hmm i think the question you meant to ask is can a one liner be effective as a set-up to a punchline

the answer is yes if the wording is right and it flows effectively & the punchline is stronger than the lead in bar, word placement and flow is important when attempting this & is where most people are gonna fuck it up, it can be done but mosta the time it'll end up getting butchered because its a result of people trying to cram two plays together when in reality they may not work well back-to-back, a set-up thats filler-ish can be alot more effective than a forced punch into a punch usually, trying to cram too much in a "bar" is a common mistake but rule of thumb quality is usually > quanity, so don't bother trying to force a weaker punch into the set-up for another if you find you have to force it in by either forcing the rhymes or fucking up the structure/wording cuz it'll hurt the effectiveness of the punchline

i'll ask you since you tend to have strong opinions

ON writing, rapping, producing and such...what is the most effective element?

such as the keys to a successful project, by production i mean solely making a beat btw

production has the strongest impact, your voice no matter how dynamic is only a small spectrum of frequencies that the listeners are going to hear the other frequencies are covered by the beats and if the production isn't solid the replay value takes a big hit and if you want people to spend money on your shit these days it better have a decent amount of replay value

rapping is the next strongest your delivery and flow matter a whole lot more than what your saying, on a project your gonna to be speaking to your intended audience for 40-60 minutes you've gotta entertain them throughout that period to keep their attention and lyrics can help but how you deliver them is always more important

alotta great rock songs have no clear message or story some are just gibberish doesn't mean they're bad songs if everything else is done right the lyrics don't matter so much
