One I use for almost everything is Unison soundfont... Its basically a generic soundfont that has every standard instrument. I'm pretty sure it's that standard one used for MIDI pianos. It's easy to google and free.

I personally use FL Studio for producing and Acid Pro for recording. Both are pretty easy to learn but a bitch to master

I tried to load this in my soundfont player in FLstudio 8 and it doesn't seem to be working. I'll try again just in case I screwed up the download or something.
